CHAPTER

Eighteen

Rae was relieved to find no one in the house when she arrived. She needed a moment to figure out how she was going to approach Mandy with the article about her mother. While she was putting her things away in the bedroom, she heard Mrs. B call her from the mudroom.

“I’m in here—I’ll be out in a minute,” Rae replied.

Feeling tired, hungry, and frazzled, Rae didn’t feel like facing anyone tonight. She wished she could just stay in her room and sleep until she heard from Skylar. She wondered where he was by now. It would be tomorrow until she heard from him, with the long travel and the time difference. She couldn’t wait to see him, hug his neck, and hear all about his months away. She was thankful Skylar had seized such an awesome opportunity when he could. With what he was coming home to, he might never get another chance like this.

Rae couldn’t help but feel anxious. She blamed a lot of it on her lack of sleep while cramming for finals, not to mention the conviction she was under for the lies and secrets that gnawed at her day and night. And now she had the added stress of figuring out how to approach Mandy about her mother’s obituary. Her head was pounding with pain, to the extent that she was feeling nauseated. Maybe I just need to have some dinner and hydrate, she thought as she rubbed her temples.

She hoped Mrs. B was alone in the house. Maybe Rae could tell her about the article and get her advice on how to approach Mandy about her mother. She found Mrs. B in the mudroom, mixing up a blue fertilizer concoction for her roses on the patio.

“Hey, there’s our hard-working girl!” Mrs. B greeted her with a grin.

“Well, I just hope all this hard work pays off,” Rae said in a distracted tone.

“Rae, are you okay?” Mrs. B quizzed with concern in her eyes. “You look so tired and stressed.” She took off her garden gloves and ran her hand down Rae’s shoulder.

“Yes, I’m okay. It’s just really a stressful time, and I came across something in the library that has me a little rattled. I saw it in the newspaper when I was researching—” The slamming screen door stopped Rae in mid-sentence.

“Hey, girls, did you leave a fat pregnant lady out here to do all the work herself?” Mandy interrupted as she bounded into the room.

“Well, somebody’s gotta do the work, might as well be the fat pregnant gal,” Rae teased as she poked her growing belly out in front of her and moved her hands for emphasis.

“Rae, why don’t you grab something to eat and join us out in the garden?” Mrs. B offered. “It’s a lovely evening!” She gave Rae a look that said, we’ll continue our conversation later. She could tell that Rae’s tone and facial expression had changed when Mandy came in, and she wondered if what she was about to say to her was private.
